It’s OVER Hillary

May 6th, 2008

Hillary please quit the race. If you split the supers then Obama will gather the necessary votes for the nomination. This includes you getting 55% in a few states. No matter what unless more than 81% of the supers vote for you you will not reach 2025 votes.

Give us and Obama a chance. Do not in your pride ruin our chances of breaking the republican stranglehold on this country.

Global Economy Falling Apart?

April 23rd, 2008

News today of Wal-Mart and other big box retailers limiting the purchases of rice has put new emphasis on a global food crisis quickly growing and even impacting the United States which typically is a net exporter of food. It seems that the lowering of the US dollar and the explosion of the price of oil which in turn is now impacting the price of fuel used by farmers globally is impacting prices in a big way.

Ever since the recession of 2000 and the 9/11 attacks airlines have been especially sensitive to fuel prices and now are faced with “Merge or Die” situations with their own fuel contracts. Elsewhere truckers are increasingly priced out of operation with 4 dollar diesel common across the entire united states. In some locations where they can cross the border to Mexico they can purchase gas for 2 dollars a gallon, but are being stopped on entering the United States. Mexican truckers who are not liked by American truckers because they could typically outbid them on Mex>US routes are now priced out of any deep deliveries into the US. Instead they will find it cheaper to drop the goods and let a US carrier finish the delivery.

Riots are becoming increasingly common in various areas of the world where the poor can not match the pace of inflation in the prices of food.

Pundits continue to say that fuel prices are a result of speculation, but I have to disagree. Fuel prices are high because the price of oil has more than quadrupled in recent years with 120 dollar oil now happening in the global markets. OPEC cut production claiming a global recession could leave too much oil on the market is no longer a plausable answer. They are seeing the effects of high oil prices and are in a situation to do something about it, but are silent. They may be silent because they CANNOT produce any more oil and that their supplies may have reached their limits and as in the US in the 70’s will trickle downward in the future.

In elementary school in the 80’s I remember talk in our books on how oil could run out in 100 years. We’ll back in the 80’s India and China were small economies and the book writers were probably counting on those countries and that region in general to not grow like it has. Lets face it, there’s not enough oil left to go around and both governments and oil producers and the countries that have the oil sat silent while this crisis has slowly brewed.

IF food becomes a severe enough issue riots can turn into wars in Africa on a scale not seen since the Germans invaded. If Africa decided to unite and attack the middle east they could easily overwhelm some of the smaller countries and the ensuing chaos could allow extreme elements of several governments to overthrow those who are friendly to western governments. Americans would be faced with a bloody war to keep the area clear so what oil is left could be sold.

However, China and Russia have been rebuilding thier armies and heavy training of their air forces suggest that they may not be content with American management of the middle east. India’s role at this point could be limited to neutrality of in the worst case cutting ties with Washington and siding with the Russians and Chinese. With the American economy weakened to the point that China could cause havoc so severe in the US that any military response would be muted until the Americans could bring the MIC into full production if at all.

While all of that is a bit far fetched, less than 15% of the US was alive during the great depression. Things are different now. It could be much worse and more than some of us may be able to deal with. My Russian friends have told me the stories of how bad things were after the fall of communism. They say for us it may be worse because of all we can lose compared to all they never had.

You have a right to assemble, do it where I say.

April 10th, 2008

There’s been a lot of talk about the Olympics lately because of where it’s being held. China has one of the most questionable human rights records and yet our president once again is being aloof in his reaction to the overall feelings about such an event being held in China.

I love how the right to assemble has now been bypassed by outright lies and misinformation. I was not surprised and predicted that the torch relay would be changed at the last minute in order to prevent protesters from voicing their opinions. It seems China’s ability to stifle negative opinion even extends to our country.

I feel that it is a slap in the face that of late, protesters are told where they can assemble and subjected to arrest and harassment if they show up anywhere else. What would the massive anti war rallies of the past have been like if they were not allowed to gather in DC, but instead forced to protest in some out of the way place?

Every American has a right to be heard. If the president or others who are being protested against do not like it, tough. It will not kill them to have to listen and see the faces of those who do not support them. Perhaps it will drag them out of the fairy tales they have woven around themselves to justify the destruction of this country.

Change is on the wind

March 4th, 2008

I live in Texas and I voted for Barack Obama. Tonight I will caucus for Barack Obama. Tomorrow I hope to continue to support Barack Obama. For once in the last 8 years I have seen hope that someone will be able to bring together people from all sides. Unite us as Americans and show the world that we are not the evil empire that Bush has shown the world.

I’m 30 this year and I hope that my generation has finally began to see how low we have fallen and that it is time that we stood up to the government that our parents and grandparents have turned a blind eye to. It is up to us to ensure that they continue to have a retirement and that we ourselves will not end up working to the end of our days. It is up to us to pull ourselves up and say it’s time for change. We will no longer accept the status quo that the only laws in this country are written by corporations and the entitled, and that it is time that we entitle ourselves to show the government that the only fear they should have is that the citizens of this country have the power to remove those who do not serve us and replace them with those who will remember that it is the people not the powerful that should be served.

Anyone who thinks that other canidates will do better from experiences that they have need a reality check. Those are the experiences that have brought this country to the state that it is in today. Soldiers today are dead because Clinton let Sinsheki downsize the military in favor of a lighter and quicker force. Workers who received the outsourced work only saw that they were exploited and it in turn has harmed the image of our country. In turn corporations in saving a buck have produced some of the lowest quality products this country has seen in a age.

Furthermore it is time we’ve demanded that health care be changed to be more affordable. The others try to scare people with “You’ll die waiting” and other similar fear messages about universal health care. In fact it is easier to die unable to pay for health care than waiting for it. Which goes back to our parents and grandparents. The current government is cutting benefits because they are afraid to tax corporations. I would gladly pay more in taxes if I knew that my parents would receive health care and that for that reason I am not burdened by an obligation to assist them if I am able. The social programs have protected the lower and middle class from being bankrupted in this manner and our government is trying to tell us that 401k’s and not Social Security are the answer. The only answer is to keep these programs going and to see that money put into the program is not wasted or ever borrowed.

Does anyone think that the old ways will ever get this done? We need politicians who are beholden to the people and not a party or the elite. We need Barack Obama.

How Low Will It Go?

January 21st, 2008

Fears of a global economic crisis are now looming after many markets worldwide lost an average of 5% during the trading session on Monday. American stock futures appear to be up, but after the bell what happens remains to be seen.

People cite a failure of the credit markets as the issue here. At issue is really the credit rating system that nearly every company out there relies on to measure financial ability. This system has failed in large part because people can easily have high scores, but little to show for it.

Here’s a good way to explain it. Joe Credit has a good middle class job paying 50k a year. His wife also works a decent job bringing in a extra 35k and they have no kids. They’re aware of their credit abilities and choose to maintain small 3k credit cards that are well within their abilities to manage them. For the big things they tend to spend cash. They also invest in their 401k to the limit of their company match. They get an average tax return of 1200 dollars. They’re able to save money and at the same time pay for a house even though the rate was a little higher. They were smart and chose a fixed 30 year mortgage.

Daddy Fatpockets and Mommyminivan both have 90k jobs, pay a baby sitter to take care of the kids. Despite their high credit ratings they maintain huge credit limits which are nearly maxed out and at the same time buy a house that is too big and buy new cars every few years. They go for the ARM because they do not want to crimp their lifestyle and they figure they’ll sell the house after a few years of price increases.

The housing bubble bursts both couples suffer a bit. Prices are going up on everything due to inflation. Joe Credit is ok because his house payment stays the same no matter what. Daddy Fatpockets is making political contributions to get his rates fixed which will probably be less than Joe’s, but he still may not be able to afford that. Despite their higher credit scores they were always living on the edge. They will soon face more problems when companies start laying off people to maintain profits and their overvalued stock prices.

I check my credit often and you know what it tells me. Says “Open more credit cards and a line of credit from the bank and you’ll have higher scores”. WTF people. I do not want more credit. What the hell am I going to buy? I can afford it with the money I make and the rest I put into savings. The only reason we have a balance on credit cards is because we use them to finance out Christmas presents and such without bothering our savings. I fall into the Joe Credit category.

Guess who gets shafted in the end?

Daddy Fatpockets will get a 30 year rate much lower than the responsible couple who are financially conservative. He’ll get a nice tax rebate which he will immediately blow in the gas tank of his new Hummer with the oversized tires.

In the end credit scores do not matter. Banks took the easy route and instead of studying the financial aspect of their customers they outsourced all their decisions to a number system that thinks it can predict behavior on what accounts you have. Credit reports do not show income. Applications never require proof of income and to an extent I doubt it’s even considered anymore. Otherwise you’d need people to check.

So a big up yours to Experian, Transunion, and Equifax. Thanks for starting the next global recession. FUCKERS!

Fixing DNS Poisioning

December 16th, 2007

I think that OSS developers could shift Mozilla into high gear against IE for security with a small change on how it goes to websites. By querying a few different DNS servers for the ip of a website it could become possible to detect trojan DNS servers when one DNS fails to send the true ip of the dns server.

IE polling cnn.com would reveal an address 147.xxx.xxx.24 and other DNS confirm this. However a bad DNS server suddenly calls up 209.xxx.xxx.137 which is a compromised DNS server using poisoning to direct traffic to a known trojan site. The same method could also query google or some AV providers to see if the destination ip is considered a trojan site as well.

So far the bigger problem with implementing the above is the use of caching to serve content. IE: Avaya or even Coralcache.

Republicons

September 19th, 2007

So are you comfy in your computer chair?  I hope so.  Lets reminisce about all the blather that has come out of the republicons over the last few months that the war was going bad.  It had seemed that portions of the GOP were finally coming around that this war in Iraq has become a huge mess due to the mismanagement of the current administration.  Yet suddenly they’re ready to give Bush more time due to a upbeat report from General Betrayus.  I’m sure people would find that a bit offensive.  Perhaps they should of looked closely at the General’s seat and saw that Bush had shoved his hand up the General’s arse and was calling the shots to congress.

Oh those other republicons who were saying the war was going badly, yeah I still remember them.  They were nothing more than a smokescreen to keep the lefter leaning portions of the party in line until they could get a reliable lifeline of disinformation to fool the public that were opening malls and Mc Donalds in Iraq because everything is going so well.

Perhaps the General needs to go back and read his oath.  Somewhere it’s protect the constitution and that comes before obeying orders of his superiors.  Lawful orders at that.  Of course if you look at the long line of fired Generals it’s no wonder he laid down like a broken dog and rolled over for his daddy.

People in this country need to wake up.  Our news is now mouthpeices for the 2 party system, our police have become oppressive of our rights to free speech, and our Government on both sides of the isle rather ignore the real problems which can be fixed and would reduce our need on the third world.  If we wanted to we could rise up and within 10 years transform the country into a energy independent powerhouse ready for anything.  Yet we sit here and spend our days keeping track of brittney, OJ, and Paris.  If we do not do anything in 10 years you’ll be looking back and wondering what went wrong.

Vote out this government on both sides and replace them with people who represent the people, not those who fund their campaigns and lifestyles.   Call and write your government even if you do not like them and complain.  Tell them things that matter like how you’ll never contribute to their party or campaign again because of betrayal.  Make them listen to you.

An Inconvient Deadly Truth

March 17th, 2007

I’m not sure what anyone reading this will think. I’ve just finished watching Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”. The movie is simply astounding on how colossally we have screwed up our own atmosphere.

The scary thing is when he showed the graph that depicted global CO2 levels over the last 650,000 years and the matching temperature variations that occur when the levels go up and down. It never crossed 300 million PPM and today were at some 400 million ppm. If at below that level things were comfortable then when it doubles again within 50 years, is it unreasonable to think that average temperatures will reach even higher and unlivable temperatures? We’ve never seen a temperature that has gone much higher than 125F, but if the graph is right then it’s conceivable that temperatures could become so hot it could boil water in some places.

Somehow that money I’ve donated to protect the rain forest does not seem like it’s going to do much. If they’re cutting the forests down and burning it, what happens when these people cross the line to where it cuts back on how much air is produced? Could it be possible that we could suffocate ourselves before we boil the oceans?

Of course I hope I’m wrong. Because there’s probably nothing we could do within 50 years that could save us.

I Love Open Source

March 2nd, 2007

Vista came out. I’m sure you heard this by now. What does it mean for the open source crowd?

Not Much. We keep innovating and moving ahead with the latest and greatest as usual. Microsoft on the other hand is looking for less innovation and more revenue. Future versions of Windows may be pay subscription models.

Eye candy? We’ve had that for awhile now. Beryl and Compiz along with KDE 4 when it publishes provides the latest features when it comes to advanced interfaces. Using Beryl has spoiled me since some of it’s features actually have enhanced my productivity, and it’s fun too!

KDE 4 will be able to display Apple style widgets as well, and yes there’s good examples of this already in SuperKaramba as well so it gets a mention as well.

The one glaring thing about all of this was that Windows has just gotten this. Does anyone remember the mad rush for Windows Xp all those years ago. Compusa had midnight openings. This time around they’re having midnight liquidations and closing more than 100 stores. Vista boxes spend almost as much time on a shelf as a Sony PS3 lately.

Linux is in a position to raise the bar where OS’s are concerned. There’s no aspect of anyone’s lives today that in some way has not been touched by Linux. It’s everywhere, it’s reliable, and best of all it’s free to use.

To every developer out there I thank you and please keep up the great work!

Terabyte Drives Spring 2007

November 20th, 2006

According to this Business2.com article the Seagate CEO claims terabyte drives will be mainstream in the spring of 2007.  The big drivers are not surprisingly companies such as Google and Myspace with their immense storage requirements.  I guess consumers are now #2 for pushing innovation in the storage industry.
